Univ. Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko

Univ. Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko is an internationally recognized specialist in the field of thoracic surgery and lung transplantation. He is a specialist in thoracic surgery at the Wiener Privatklinik in Vienna, medical director of the Vienna International Center for Thoracic Oncology (VICTO) at the WPK and chairman of both the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna.

In 2021, he was listed by Stanford University as one of the top 3% most published scientists in the world, and in 2023, he ranked among the top 5% top scientists in the world. His impact factor is approximately 1020 and his H-index is 64.

• Prof. Klepetko completed his basic training in surgery at the Medical University of Vienna (MUW), and underwent training programs at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, University of San Diego and Harefield Hospital in London,
• In 1989 he was certified by the Austrian Board and in 1999 by the European Certification Board (FEBTCS),
• In 1989, he became director of the Lung Transplant Program in Vienna, which under his leadership became one of the leading lung transplant programs in the world,
• In 2003, Prof. Dr. Klepetko was appointed professor of thoracic surgery at MUW,
• Since 2010, he has been chairman and chief of the division of thoracic surgery at MUW,
• In 2019, he was elected chair of the Department of Surgery,
• In 2002 Prof. Klepetko founded the European Postgraduate Centre for Thoracic Surgery in Bergamo, which he directed until 2009,
• In 2002-2003 he was President of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS),
• From 2004 to 2007 Prof. Dr. Klepetko was an advisor to the Council of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT),
• From 2006 to 2008, he served as an International Advisor to the American Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (AATS),
• In 2021 Prof. Klepetko was included by Stanford University in the top 3% of the most published scientists in the world,
• At present, Univ. Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko is the Director of the Vienna International Center for Thoracic Oncology (VICTO) and also the Chairman of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna.
