  • 1999 - 2005: Prof. Dr. Stefan Ries studied human medicine at the Medical University of Vienna;
  • 2005: Graduation with a thesis on "Validation of the minimally invasive approach in Crohn's disease surgery";
  • 2005: medical internship at Herz Jesu KH, Vienna;
  • 2006 - 2012: Surgical Assistant Physician at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of General/Transplant Surgery;
  • 2012: Appointed as a specialist in general surgery;
  • 2012 - 2013: Colorectales/Peritonealkarzinose Fellowship at Basingstoke and New Hampshire Hospital (UK);
  • 2013: Awarded Venia docendi (Habilitation: "Functional aspects in colorectal surgery");
  • Since 2014: Head of the outpatient clinic 7C for pelvic floor surgery at the Vienna Multidisciplinary Hospital;
  • 2015: appointment as "Associate Professor";
  • 2016: Colorectales Fellowship, Western General Hospital, University of Edinburgh, UK;
  • Appointment as head of the colon/rectum/anus working group of the Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology (ACO-ASSO);
  • Appointment as Vice-Chair of the Coloproctology Working Group (CWG);
  • Currently senior physician at the University Clinic of Surgery, Vienna.

  • Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology (ACO-ASSO).

Prof. Dr. Stefan is a reviewer for many leading and standard journals.

  • Pelvic floor surgery (constipation, incontinence, prolapse);
  • Proctology (hemorrhoids, anal fistulas);
  • Surgery of metastases (peritoneum, appendix tumors);
  • General surgery (hernias, inguinal hernias, gallstones);
  • Endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, rectoscopy).

Additional information

Prof. Dr. Stefan Ries has given numerous lectures abroad. He is a lecturer in surgical seminars (e.g. laparoscopic colon surgery, pelvic floor surgery) and a reviewer in many leading and standard journals.
