  • Dr. Michael Hafner graduated from the Sacre Cœur Pressbaum secondary and higher school in Austria in June 1987,
  • Studied medicine at the University of Vienna (Austria) and at the Università degli Studi Perugia (Italy) - graduated as Doctor of Medicine on 23 January 1995,
  • From 1996 to 2002 Dr. Hafner studied internal medicine at the Medical University of Vienna (Austria). He also trained in cardiology, hemato-oncology, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and infectious disease medicine,
  • Between 2002 and 2005 he pursued training in gastroenterology and hepatology,
  • In 2004 he completed an internship in the endoscopy department at the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli, Università del Sacro Cuore in Rome,
  • Since 2005, he has been appointed "Scientific Administrator" at the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) in London,
  • Between 2005 and 2007, Dr. Hafner was appointed "Senior Clinical Specialist" at Prince Court Medical Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
  • In the same year, 2005, he organized a practical training course in interventional endoscopy in Durban, South Africa,
  • In the same year, he also started full-time teaching at the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) Training Centre as part of the United European Gastroenterology Week,
  • In September 2009, Dr. Hafner became head of the internal medicine department at St. In 2009 he joined the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Vienna,
  • In 2013 he took part in live endoscopy seminars in Austria, Greece, Egypt and Germany;

Memberships and publications

Dr. Michael Hafner is a member and is:

  • Head of the endoscopy working group of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ÖGGH),
  • Advisor to the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE),
  • Honorary member of the South African Society of Gastroenterology (SAGES),
  • In 1992/1993, Dr. Hafner was awarded a European Community Grant (ERASMUS-ECTS) (Università degli Studi Perugia, Italy),
  • 1995/1996 - received a research grant from the Austrian Ministry of Science "Endoscopic Diagnosis of Malignant Biliary Tract Strictures",
  • 2003 - Received the Young Pioneers Award of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology,
  • 2005 - Received a research grant from the Mayor of Vienna for the project "Computer-aided analysis of colonic pit patterns",
  • 2006 - Received a research grant from the "Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung" for the project "Computer-aided analysis of colonic pit patterns" (together Uhl, University of Salzburg),
  • 2007 - Received a research grant from the Austrian National Bank for the project "Computer-aided analysis of colonic pit patterns";

Clinical areas of interest

  • Specialist in basic interventions in gastrointestinal endoscopy,
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for the treatment of biliary tract and pancreatic diseases,
  • Endoscopic removal of early carcinomas using new techniques such as endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

Additional information

Dr. Hafner has over 60 publications with a scientific focus on computer-aided detection of changes in the digestive tract, including with artificial intelligence. He speaks excellent German, English, Italian and French.
