A person expects many things.
We look forward to the weekend. We look forward to vacation. We look forward to holidays and time with family. We look forward to bills, fines, and taxes.
You don't expect your eight-year-old daughter to have a brain tumor. You don't expect to hear you have days to operate. And least of all do you expect to be the one deciding who operates on your child.
In just a few days, I spoke with neurosurgeons from Bulgaria, Turkey, Switzerland, and Germany. I admit – I was skeptical about surgery in Turkey. I would have felt more secure in Germany or Switzerland, at least because of the language barrier. But in the following days, my daughter's condition worsened. The responses from Germany and Switzerland were coming too slowly. In the end, circumstances decided for us.
Just then, another important person appeared in our history.

At that time, I didn't yet know how true those words were.

Three days later, we were sitting in front of Professor Mehmet Özek in Istanbul.
This extremely busy person took considerable time for us. He explained our daughter's condition, the risks and chances of the surgery, and answered all our questions in detail.
My wife and I immediately felt something very important: that we could trust Prof. Yosek and entrust our daughter to him.
The operation is called: craniotomy with microscopic resection of the lesion. For neurosurgeons, these are probably just medical terms. For us, it meant: someone cuts a hole in your child's skull, removes a part of the brain, and then closes it again.
One day after the surgery, my daughter was sitting in the hospital bed talking to me. Today, 45 days after the surgery, she is back at school. No motor disabilities, no cognitive deficits.
I believe in fate.
And I believe that fate brought us to people like Prof. Mehmet Özäk and Zvezdelina Lutvi
