Pediatric oncohematology

In small patients, afflicted by an insidious disease, the complexity of treatment is complemented by the fact that, in parallel with the rapid development of the organism, tumor formations also develop rapidly. Therefore, prompt and timely diagnosis is the basis of a life-saving approach.

The most common cancers in children are:

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia and acute myelogenous leukemia.
These cancers develop very quickly and are accompanied by bone and joint pain, fatigue, weakness, fever, weight loss.
  • Tumors of the brain and central nervous system.
Symptoms are: headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred or double vision. Difficulty walking and holding objects.
  • Neuroblastoma - the causes of its occurrence are mostly hereditary.
There are four forms depending on cell type and localization.

Rarely affecting children over 10 years of age, in infants and toddlers it is common. Symptomatology depends on the localization of metastases. The first and second stages have a high success rate of treatment by surgery and radiotherapy. Subsequent stages are quite difficult to manage. Diagnosis is as follows - blood, urine, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, tumor biopsy and histological examination.

The treatment of neuroblastoma is by: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery at the highest level. The advantages of robotic surgery are hard to count, but the most important are: less pain, minimized risk of infection, three-dimensional and enlarged images during surgery help to preserve blood vessels and nerves.

Other more common diagnoses in modern pediatric oncohematology are Wilms tumor or nephroblastoma, retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma.
