Labiaplasty is an aesthetic correction that aims to surgically reduce the size of the labia minora by making them more proportionate to the genitals. The surgery also successfully corrects asymmetry in the size of the labia minora.
The operation is not only applied for aesthetic reasons. In some women, the labia minora are so large that when they walk they experience pain from the friction. They may also have complaints of irritation, itching, twisting or a stretching sensation in this area.
Labiaplasty can be done under local anesthesia with oral sedation or under general anesthesia.
The procedure involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. Unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or laser. The free edge can be sutured with fine, dissolvable stitches.
The whole procedure takes about 1-2 hours.
The hospital stay after the procedure is overnight if general anesthesia was used. If local anaesthesia was used the patient can be discharged 2 hours after the procedure.
Discomfort is possible in the first few days after surgery,as the labia minora will be swollen and slightly painful. You may be uncomfortable sitting up and have discomfort when urinating. However, the pain and discomfort are quite moderate and you will be given painkillers for them.
After labiaplasty, you may need 3-4 days to recover. The discomfort from the surgery disappears completely after 1-2 weeks.
