Проф. д-р Фатих Агалар

Prof. Dr. Fatih Agalar, a surgeon from the high-tech Liv Hospital in Turkey, internationally recognized in Europe and the USA, will consult patients in Sofia for free on September 18. The consultations are suitable for people who are interested in laparoscopic and robotic surgery options for colon, liver, breast, stomach, esophageal and other cancers. Prof. Agalar is coming to our country at the invitation of the Health Information Center "Medical Karaj", as part of their initiative to provide Bulgarian patients with access to the latest advances in medicine by partnering with some of the best medical institutions and specialists from around the world.

Robotic surgery for colorectal cancer

Colon cancer is one of the most common localizations in cancer. In about 90% of cases, it is caused by polyps, which are initially benign, noncancerous and nonmetastatic growths, and are easily detected by colonoscopy. If they are removed in time with an endoscopic method (polypectomy), their transformation into malignant tumours is prevented to a very high degree, notes Prof. Agilar.

In the presence of cancer, surgery is a standard part of the treatment process. It can be open, laparoscopic (closed) or robotic. Robotic surgeries have been used for 15 years and bring a number of advantages for both the doctor and the patient. Behind the name "robotic surgery" is in fact an operation performed by a surgeon and assisted by the technological capabilities of a Da Vinci robot. The doctor sits at a so-called console and controls the robot's "arms", monitoring the entire process with the help of an optical camera system that allows 10-fold image magnification. This way, movements are much more precise, incisions and blood loss are minimal, and the robot reaches areas inaccessible to the human hand.

The use of a robot gives great advantages in rectal cancer operations where the organ has a narrow bone structure, especially in men, points out Professor. Agilar. After open surgery of rectal cancer in men, there is a high probability of damage to urinary and sexual functions. With the robotic method, the likelihood of such a complication is very low.

Oncoplastic surgery for breast cancer

Breast cancer is a frightening diagnosis with huge physical and psychological consequences for a woman. In recent years, however, medicine has developed the ability not only to treat the disease, but also to spare patients some of the psychological burden. Oncoplastic techniques are part of this development and have enjoyed great interest over the last 10 years. They aim to combine the treatment of cancer diagnosis with plastic reconstructive techniques. But when it comes to cancer, the cosmetic result and the medical treatment are two opposing driving forces, notes Prof. Fatih Agalar. That's why the team's experience is of leading importance. It must be kept in mind that oncoplastic techniques are not for every patient and every doctor.
