What is the procedure to reduce labia majora?

Labiaplasty is a procedure designed to surgically reduce the size of the outer labia majora.
This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the amount of tissue to be removed.
The plastic surgeon removes two light crescents of skin from the inside of each labia. The amount to be removed depends on the amount of excess tissue. In some cases, when there is atrophy of fatty tissue, a small amount of fat may be transferred from another part of the body after liposuction. Closure is usually done with resorbable sutures.

When do you need labiaplasty?

Patients who feel their labia majora are too large or droopy may experience discomfort from activities such as cycling or embarrassment from the unaesthetic appearance.

What are the risks of labiaplasty?

Risks include bleeding, hematoma, infection, scarring, under-resection, over-resection.

Recovery period after labiaplasty:

You may need about a week to recover from your labiaplasty procedure.
Sexual intercourse is allowed after four to six weeks.
Swelling after the procedure may last 6 months or longer, depending on the thickness of the tissue, although much of the swelling disappears within 6 weeks.

What are the results of labiaplasty?

This procedure usually results in smaller, tighter labia majora.
Lipofilling has been used with excellent results in patients who complain of volume loss in the labia majora area.

Complications

Labiaplasty can sometimes result in:

• Bleeding
• infection
• Scars
• reduced sensitivity of the genitals

Each type of surgery also carries a small risk of:

• blood clots
• allergic reaction to the anaesthetic
