Hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair surgery, is a surgical procedure that aims to reconstruct the skin membrane known as the hymen, located in the lower half of the vagina. This fibrous and elastic tissue is usually torn during the first sexual intercourse, but can also tear after physical exertion, sudden movements or even when using tampons. Hymen repair is a simple procedure that involves sewing the torn edges together with dissolvable stitches. It is usually performed with local anesthesia only.
Typically, patients who request this type of surgery want to restore the original appearance of the hymen for cultural or religious reasons. This is because in some cultures the hymen is seen as a symbol of virginity.
The surgical procedure is fairly simple and consists of reconstruction of the hymen using fine, dissolvable sutures. The duration of surgery is approximately thirty minutes to one hour. The newly formed hymen will also bleed upon rupture. The new hymen is constructed from the original torn hymen tissue.
In the days before your hymenoplasty, you should avoid smoking, and some medications may need to be stopped, depending on your surgeon's advice.
You can expect mild pain after surgery, but you should be able to return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. It is important that the patient rest during these 48 hours. The stitches are dissolvable, so they do not require removal later. Complete healing takes up to three months, during which time intercourse should be avoided.
